How to support a child reading English independently
Useful support leaves room for the child to notice the answer. Try the picture, sentence meaning and first sound before simply supplying the word.

Wait for a few seconds first
If the adult supplies every word immediately, the child learns to look up before thinking. When they are not distressed, pause and let them revisit the picture or sentence. Silence can be active reading time.

Use the smallest useful prompt
Move from meaning to sound: “What is happening in the picture?”, “What word would make sense here?”, then “What is the first sound?” If it is still difficult, model the word naturally and reread the sentence together.

Keep questions conversational
A question after every page can make a book feel like a test. Mix in open prompts such as “Does this character look pleased?” or “What might happen next?” to check understanding through real conversation.
